(Bonus) We'd Approve Almost Any Drug (But We Won't Approve That)

Welcome to Molecular Ideas, and thanks for sharing your time with us today! Today, we have a song parody as a follow-up to our recent post on the FDA's role as a partner in the drug development process - and why it's so important that they get it right. You can check it out here.

Earlier this week, we talked about how the FDA safeguards the public's interests for safe and efficacious medication, and what happens when it goes right, wrong, or sideways.

With all that in mind, it's time for our song parody of Meat Loaf's famous rock ballad, I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That), re-written to reflect the FDA's unique position in the drug development and approval process. And if I took the words right out of your mouth...it must have been because you knew where this post was going.

(You can listen to the song and check out the full (annotated) lyrics on Genius)

Lyrics

And we'd approve almost any drug,

It's our job to watch patient's backs

We'd approve almost any drug,

If the data shows it's safe with impact

But we'll never let it pass without discussion & debate

Oh no, no way

We'd approve almost any drug

But we won't approve that

No we won't approve that

And some data evaluates easy

And some data evaluates hard

And some data don't make sense at all

And these are the drugs that never pass

But some diseases have no cure

And some diseases have a bunch

Some drugs need innovation

Something better to bring a new day in

And maybe they're crazy

Some of the questions we ask, it's true

If your drug can save lives

And nothing else can save them now but you

(then) as long as the pipelines are churning

And the investor's dollars are burning

And we get closer to patient dreams coming true

You better believe it

That we'd approve almost any drug

And monitor phase IV data snap(shot)s

And we'd approve almost any drug

You can leave clinical trials in the past

But we'd never forgive ourselves if don't debate

All night

Oh, we'd approve almost any drug

Oh, we'd approve almost any drug

Oh, we'd approve almost any drug

But we won't approve that

We'd approve almost any drug

Anything you've been dreaming of

But we won't approve that

We'd approve almost any drug

Anything you've been dreaming of

But we won't approve that

We'd approve almost any drug

Anything you've been dreaming of

But we won't approve that

And sometimes we work on infectious disease

And sometimes we work on onco

Sometimes we validate data in our labs to show

If you may accidentally lose feeling

Or even go lose control

Of your mind or bowels, that's something patients should know

It might seem lonely

But that's not what you should see

There's thousands of us

Keeping you safe for government fees

As long as the pipelines are churning

And the investor's dollars are burning

And we get closer to patient dreams coming true

You better believe it

That we'd approve almost any drug

With the right data, and that's a fact

That we'd approve almost any drug

And they'll never be debate 'bout that

And we know clinical trials take 10 years

so long

Oh, we'd approve almost any drug

But we won't approve that

We'd approve almost any drug

Anything you've been dreaming of

But we won't approve that

We'd approve almost any drug

Anything you've been dreaming of

But we won't approve that

We'd approve almost any drug

Anything you've been dreaming of

But we won't approve that

We'd approve almost any drug

Anything you've been dreaming of

But we won't approve that

And you should never stop dreaming of how to go save patient lives

No way

We'd approve almost any drug

We'd approve almost any drug

We'd approve almost any drug

But we won't approve that

So will you raise your capital?

Investors, don't mark down

We're gonna get this out of the lab right now.

Will you help us get ready to go?

(We can do that! Yeah, we can do that!)

Will you go through trials

And stay up all night

To ensure enrollment is fair and just right?

Will you audit accessible sites?

(We can do that! Yeah, we can do that!)

Will you figure the dosage across different plans?

Do you know what this drug does and what it can't?

Can you use it in the clinic or home?

(Together, we'll tell you that! Yeah, we'll tell you that!)

Will you respond promptly to every question we got?

Yes, and you'll do the same, or tensions will get hot (hot!)

And we'll move together into the unknown

(Now can do that! Oh yeah, we can do that!)

After a while the panel debates,

They'll decide whether this drug is bad or it's great

And they'll issue a formal response

And what response is that?

And what response is that?

We know the category, and what drugs around,

We know that some drugs go on

And others fall down

And now we need you to go back to clinical trial rounds

Because we can't yet approve that.

No we can't yet approve that.

We'd approve almost any drug

Yeah, we'd approve almost any drug

But we won't yet approve that

No, we won't yet approve that.
